"The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow" at Coliseu do Porto
Marionet was invited to perform its show “The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow” by FITEI – Festival Internacional de Teatro de Expressão Ibérica at Coliseu do Porto, in “O Meu Primeiro FITEI”.
“The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow”, by the awarded American playwright and screenwriter Rolin Jones, was presented for the first time in Portugal in December 2019, by Marionet, at the Convento São Francisco, in Coimbra. The play tells the story of a 22-year-old young woman who suffers from agoraphobia and spends her time inside her bedroom, building a humanoid that looks like her. The only social contacts she has are with her dysfunctional adoptive family, the pizza delivery boy, and online, with three individuals she resorts to in order to achieve her ultimate goal: building a girl who can replace her on a trip around the world to find her past and her biological mother, whom she never met.
Among other themes, this play introduces us to a reality where the emotional distance between people is easier to overcome by the use of technology than by human interaction. An increasingly urgent subject in modern societies.
The FITEI – Festival Internacional de Teatro de Expressão Ibérica (International Theatre Festival of Iberian Expression), Portugal’s first theatre festival, was created in Porto in 1978, with the goal of promoting theatre, performing arts, and artistic creation. Both national and international companies and artists participate in the festival, with seminal artworks, classical and contemporary, as well as with experimental and transdisciplinary projects, containing new artistic languages in the field of performing arts. O Meu Primeiro FITEI (My First FITEI), with its second edition in 2021, is conceived for a younger audience and is also a return to the theatres with no capacity restrictions.
O Meu Primeiro FITEI takes place in Porto, from 29 October to 2 November.
