Born in 2000, Marionet is a theatre company based in Coimbra, Portugal, with a continued work in the interlacement of the performing arts with science. It develops original artistic creations based on scientific themes, conducts research in the field of the performing arts-science intersection, promotes collaborative artistic works with scientists, participates in advanced training projects in scientific research centres and is involved in participatory science projects.
In 2010, Marionet was selected for a seven months residency at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra, within the Residency Network Program of DGArtes and Agência Ciência Viva. Since then, the company has collaborated with this research centre in activities to promote science, in its advanced training program in experimental biology and biomedicine in the area of science communication, as well as in various artistic projects.
In 2012 we started a Documentation Centre for the Performing Arts and Science, a repository of plays and essays on the intersection between these two areas of knowledge. In 2015 the company’s activity was financed by the American scientist and writer Carl Djerassi. Also noteworthy, between 2009 and 2016, the participation in the European Night of Researchers, in partnership with the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra, with the collaborative creation of plays with scientists.
