The Dream Machine is a performance resulting from the activity of the Laboratório do Desconhecimento (Unkownness Lab), around the theme of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and presented in the event Dormir bem, Envelhecer melhor (Sleep well, Age better), on World Sleep Day.
The Unkownness Lab is a research and creation initiative aiming to tackle scientific challenges with an interdisciplinary team of artists and scientists. The main premise is to face unresolved scientific questions by using artistic tools, techniques and perspectives, and attempt to eventually reach some progress or enlightening concerning these questions, and evaluate the process as well as any possible advantages arising from this interdisciplinary approach.

The first topic approached in this context was the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). A group of artists from Marionet and of scientists from UC’s Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) have gathered regularly to discuss the theme, and some results from these meetings have been shared publicly.
One of these moments of sharing will happen on World Sleep Day. We will be presenting a performance resulting from the Unkownness Lab’s activity around OSAS. We called it “The Dream Machine”.
Unkownness Lab is a Marionet initiative together with Centro de Neurociências e Biologia Celular da Universidade de Coimbra (CNC – Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology), with collaboration from Laboratório de Investigação e Práticas Artísticas (LIPA – Laboratory of Research and Artistic Practices) and Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), and supported by Direcção-Geral das Artes (DGArtes).
