With celebrations in full swing, bassist Joel Grip and saxophonist Pierre Borel will be presenting their latest works for the first time at a concert on Thursday 23 February at 10pm at the Casa das Artes of the Bissaya Barretto Foundation in Coimbra. Bassist Joel Grip and saxophonist Pierre Borel are two leading figures in European jazz and improvised music. The international duo is currently on tour in Portugal and will be performing their influential work in the emerging European improvised music scene in Coimbra.

Joel Grip is dedicated to exploring his instrument as a soloist, duo player or in the context of improvisation ensembles. Interested in innovative forms of collective action by musicians, he founded the Umlaut Records label, whose main objective is to develop the ability of creators to circulate their works as widely as possible. Since 2003, he has been one of the main organisers of the Hagenfesten in Dala-Floda, Sweden.
Pierre Borel is an instrumentalist and composer from Paris, working in the field of improvised and experimental music. He has performed throughout Europe, Japan and the United States. He is a regular partner of musicians such as Tobias Delius, Hannes Lingens, Derek Shirley, Tetuzi Akiyama, Christoph Kurzmann and Didier Lasserre, among others. He obtained his Master’s degree in Jazz in Berlin in 2008. Since then, he has pursued a series of questions about musical creation and aesthetics in his philosophy studies (Paris).
