Today is World Theatre Day
World Theatre Day should always be about celebrating how much theatre has brought to our lives, but often, and once again, it is overshadowed by the uncertainty of funding and public support for theatre, and this time particularly blackened by the uncertainty of the Portuguese state’s support for theatre companies, represented by the Directorate General for the Arts.
This concern for the future of this generation of theatre-makers is reflected in Dario Fo’s text, which in keeping with tradition will be read today in theatres around the world. He says: “The only solution to the crisis lies in the hope of the great witch-hunt against us, especially against young people who want to learn the art of theatre”.
We haven’t given up on celebrating theatre, but as we have nothing on our agenda today, we leave you with two suggestions, both in Coimbra, our city. The TEUC presents an open rehearsal of the “H project” and the TAGV brings João Garcia Miguel’s play “As Barcas” to its stage, with tickets priced at €1.
