The plot of ‘Mundos Possíveis’ begins with the discovery of a crime: the body of one of the characters is found with its skull split open and its brain missing. From this initial catalyst, a pair of detectives embark on an investigation to uncover who committed such an act and why, in what one reviewer has described as a science-fiction crime thriller. Anchored in a fragmented and analepic structure, the play jumps between different temporal states and states of consciousness, presenting us with the challenge of a journey into the interior of a disembodied human brain, kept artificially alive. And it leads us to reflect on how consciousness is formed in the human brain, combining cognitive neuroscience with a plot typical of a detective novel.
‘Possible Worlds’, by the Canadian mathematician and playwright John Mighton, was one of the plays read and translated as part of Marionet’s ‘Reading Theatre with Science’ initiative.
