What do you do when someone you love starts to forget you? This is the story of the friendship between a grandfather who is slowly losing his memories and his inventor grandson who is dedicated to finding a cure. Through the sensitivity of a child, we learn the most important lesson: love is stronger than forgetfulness.
With script by Rui Zink, the show includes live music by Aníbal Andrade and performances by Eduardo Faria and Joana Soares, and is aimed at families and young audiences. This creation brings to the stage the complexity of family relationships in the face of the adversities of forgetfulness and dementia, delving into the universe of feelings and challenges faced by people who live with elderly people affected by conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
The story explores the pain of gradual memory loss, a reality that affects around 200,000 families in Portugal, highlighting the complex nature of these situations, which not only transform the lives of patients, but also those around them. By addressing sensitive and stigmatised issues, ‘O Avô tem uma borracha na cabeça’ seeks to humanise the relationship that each person has, or may come to have, with this or other types of dementia. The narrative, rich in emotion and simplicity, serves as a vital tool, demonstrating that fiction is an effective way to face and understand harsh realities. And despite them, Zink’s text is guaranteed to be irreverent and humorous, with an accessible and direct style, a critical perspective and enormous empathy.
