Marionet in the magazine Rua Larga

Marionet is featured in issue 58 of Rua Larga magazine, whose theme is “Voice”, the same as the University of Coimbra’s Cultural Week. Our contribution to this publication is the article “As vozes na cabeça calam a boca” (The voices in the head shut the mouth), by Mário Montenegro. In it, our artistic director contextualises the “Hearing Voices” project, which resulted in a sound installation, a round table, participation in the Rádio Aurora podcast, and a partnership with the Público newspaper.

 

It was also in this context that we presented the show “Countless Voices“, which was created with the help of testimonies from people who hear voices, often associated with mental illness.

 

In the article, Mário Montenegro says that “generalisation is something we tend to do, perhaps as a way of putting order into the complex world we live in. But generalisation equalises, dilutes differences, erases the individual, takes the part for the whole. Which, in many circumstances, is not a good thing. There is a social stigma associated with mental illness that spreads to the experience of hearing voices and that needs to be combated.”
