“Estás a ouvir-me?” (“Can you hear me?“) is a sound installation produced within the project “Ouvir Vozes” by Marionet – Cultural Association, in partnership with the Movimento Ouvir Vozes Portugal, Aurora Radio – a Outra Voz (Júlio de Matos Hospital) and the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, that combines mental health activism, scientific research and artistic creation on the experience of hearing voices that other people don’t hear.
Initially presented from November 25th to December 10th, 2021, at Teatro da Cerca de São Bernardo, “Can you hear me?” was conceived from “Countless Voices”, a theatrical play based on the testimonies of people who can hear, having as a starting point a question that, in the midst of the 17209 words of the play’s script, was able to disturb the author of the installation, Silvio Correia Santos. It is her that these sounds portray.
