"The Virtuoso" is coming
In December we present a virtuous Marionet co-production with the Gil Vicente Academic Theatre. Written by Thomas Shadwell and premiered in 1676, ‘The Virtuoso’ is the first play in theatre history to feature a scientist as the main character. Thus, this will be a particularly special show for us (and we hope for you too), given the research work that Marionet has been doing for over 20 years in the field of the disciplinary crossover between theatre and science.
Translated into Portuguese by our artistic director Mário Montenegro, the work portrays science as a set of ridiculous and vain activities carried out by individuals who have nothing better to do with their time. Although the text is absolutely linked to the era in which it was written, it nevertheless touches on timeless themes, allowing us to put them into perspective.
The play is a comedy, in the typical style of those written during the Restoration of the English monarchy, at the end of the 17th century. In ‘The Virtuoso’ an intricate plot unfolds, in which the brand new modern science mixes with the age-old science of love.
Virtuously unmissable, right?
