How can theatre respond politically to the climate crisis? This book presents various responses and reflects on the possible impacts of theatre.
The climate emergency requires theatre to reflect on the changes that need to be made and the forms of engagement that need to be developed. It is leading institutions and companies to transform, sometimes radically, their production models. Performances also challenge spectators-citizens, inviting them to take action in a variety of ways. Artists seek to influence perceptions of reality and action, to promote the greening of culture, and thus to re-examine the meaning of theatre, which remains a profoundly anthropocentric art form.
In light of these experiences, this book examines the experimentation with ecological entanglements on stage, the transformative potential of emotions and imagination, and the place given to tragedy and critical thinking.
