FAQ | Reading Theatre with Science & Collaborative Translation Project

In order to clarify any doubts you may have about the Collaborative Translation Project and Reading Theatre with Science, we leave here the most frequently asked questions. If you do not see your question answered, please send us an email to ler@marioneteatro.com.

 

IS PRIOR REGISTRATION NECESSARY?

Yes, you need to register in advance so we can distribute the text for the translation and print copies for everyone in the readings. We will inform you of the deadline for registration when the readings and translations are announced.

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PARTICIPATE?

To participate you just need to contact us and confirm your participation. Our contacts are available here and you can call us, send an email, SMS, or WhatsApp message. The registration can also be done through our social networks, with a simple private message expressing the desire to participate.

 

DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL THE SESSIONS?

No, participating in a session does not imply the participation in the following. In other words, each session is worthwhile on its own, for both translators and readers.

 

HOW OFTEN DOES THE PROJECTS TAKE PLACE?

The Reading Theatre with Science project takes place every two months at Marionet space or in other locations in the city of Coimbra, which are announced beforehand. The Collaborative Translation Project takes place between the reading sessions.

 

IS THERE ANY COST ASSOCIATED?

None of the projects have any cost associated with them.

 

IF I TRANSLATE, DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE READING? 

Although the Reading Theatre with Science and the Collaborative Translation Project complete each other, they are independent projects. Therefore, participation in one does not imply participation in the other.

 

CAN I ONLY PARTICIPATE IN THE READING IF I HAVE TRANSLATED?

DO I NEED TO KNOW/READ THE BOOK? 

No, nor do volunteer translators have to know the entire work, just the part they are translating. The beauty is exactly there: bringing together a group of people to discover the magic of an unknown book.

 

HOW ARE THE PLAYS TO TRANSLATE/READ SELECTED?

All the plays belong to the Documentation Centre on the Performing Arts and Science. A selection is made and put to a public vote on our social networks, and the one with the most votes from the public is the selected play. We have over 100 plays, and we regularly add new ones to our library, which gives us the guarantee of many future readings and translations.

 

HOW DOES THE PARTICIPATION IN THESE PROJECTS WORK?

In the Collaborative Translation Project, once the work has been selected and the translator registrations have closed, we divide the play equally among all the volunteer translators, never exceeding a maximum of 4/5 pages per person. A deadline is set for the translations (usually three weeks), and then they are collected and proofread. In Reading Theatre with Science, the text is distributed to the readers during the session and read by everyone, amidst exchanges of characters, tea mugs, cakes, and lots of laughter.

 

CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE READING AS A LISTENER?

Yes. It’s not mandatory that all the people enrolled in the Reading Theatre with Science participate as readers, they can follow the session as listeners.
