This is what our 2025 will be like
First of all, this year will be very special as we will be celebrating 25 years of uninterrupted Marionet activity! As for what to expect over the next 12 months, let’s start at the beginning…
In January, on the 22nd at 6pm, we’ll be Reading Theatre with Science at Semente Atelier. This will be the 23rd of these sessions, which began in 2021 and are open to anyone who wants to discover theatre plays inspired by scientific themes within a group of people. This time, the book selected is ‘The Water Engine’, the Portuguese version of which is once again being offered to us by the Collaborative Translation Project, and registrations can already be made through this email: ler@marioneteatro.com
The following month, on 8 February, we’ll be taking to the Casa da Cultura in Seia the show ‘Oxímoro, entre solstícios e equinócios’, which we premiered in Coimbra almost a year ago. Since then, many people have shown an interest in seeing this original Marionet creation, the theme of which is bipolar disorder, so we’re very happy that it’s going to start travelling to other places.
It is precisely the text of this show that will start a collection of publications by Marionet, in partnership with Húmus, and the launch of this book is scheduled for World Theatre Day on 27 March. On the same day, we’ll be holding our second theatre reading of the year, following our (and your) desire to read theatre with science.
Also in March, we will be presenting a new creation, another show based on the health sciences. As part of the ‘Behind Happiness’ project, the play is based on testimonies gathered from people who live or work with rheumatic diseases, in close partnership with the Rheumatology Service of the Coimbra University Hospital / Coimbra Local Health Unit. You can put it in your diary now: 12 to 16 March, at the Cerca de São Bernardo Theatre.
The month of April will bring back the energy and enthusiasm of a group of young people and children taking part in a new Theatre and Science Workshop. That same month, we will present another artistic object from the Marionet Digital project which, as always, will be available on our online platforms.
In May, we will once again gather around a theatrical work to translate, read and discuss it, accompanied by tea and cookies. The month of June will be dedicated to preparing future initiatives, so we’ll be working more at our headquarters, where you can pay us a visit and request one of the almost 200 books we have in the Performing Arts and Science Documentation Centre.
Before the summer holidays, there will still be time for not one, but two Workshops, both in July, where we will resume the creative and pedagogical work of crossing performing arts and science. Also in July, the 26th session of Reading Theatre with Science will take place, followed by another in September. It’s also this month, specifically on World Contraception Day (26 September), that we’ll be publishing the second book in our collection, this time with the text of ‘iMmaculate’, which we premiered in 2023.
October will be a particularly busy month, with the 3rd edition of the Theatre About Science International Conference, organised biennially by Marionet in partnership with various artistic and scientific organisations. In the context of this meeting, we will be launching a book containing texts from the 2023 edition and it will also be during this event that we will be celebrating our company’s birthday in a big way on 23 October!
Finally, the last couple of months before the end of the year will be no less intense. In November, we’ll host the last reading session of 2025 and present another Marionet Digital video. And between 18 and 20 December, we’ll end the year on a high note, at the Gil Vicente Academic Theatre, with the presentation of a new show, the text of which was one of those previously selected for Reading Theatre with Science.
In addition to all this, there will be many more initiatives and surprises, so stay tuned!
